ANON. Muskoka Memories. (Bala: The Twins Studio and English Tea Garden): (Printed by
Parkview Press, Toronto), nd (194-?). Sm. 8vo., orig. pictorial
wrappers, (36)pp. A previous owner, one Eleanor Carson of Bala, has
annotated this work (and has added poems of her own), and has also
listed the names of other women, who do not have poems published in
the work, so it is unclear just how they are associated with the
booklet or the Wishing Well Memorial.
It appears this little booklet of poetry by various people (one
assumes residents of Muskoka, though not exclusively) was published to
raise money for the Wishing Well Fund. 12 pages near the end list
those who gave their lives in service 1939-1945 and are to be named on
the ‘Wishing Well Memorial.’ It also states that further contributions
from the Wishing Well will be used to assist veterans confined to
hospital.

GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO. Survival Under Atomic Attack. NP: Civil Defence Committee of the Province of Ontario, nd (1947).
8vo., orig. self wrappers, 32pp. (with p. 32 the outer rear wrapper,
which is blank). With a 'Notice' pasted on the front reading: NOTICE.
You and your family are urgently requested to study this booklet and
keep same for future reference. Joseph Banigan Acting Co-Ordinator H.T.
Burrell, Mayor of the Town of Leaside. Stain on lower corner of the
rear wrapper, not affecting text, a couple of ‘dents' in rear wrapper
o/w a better than very good copy of this civil defence publication.
The date was ascertained by the term of Mayor Burrell, who was in that
position from 1938-1947.
The first page reads ‘YOU CAN SURVIVE. You can live through an
atom bomb raid and you won't have to have a Geiger counter, protective
clothing, or special training. The secrets of survival are: KNOW THE
BOMB'S TRUE DANGERS. KNOW THE STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO ESCAPE THEM.' The
remainder of the booklet outlines the steps one can follow to survive
a nuclear attack.
WITH:
GOVERNMENT OF CANADA. (cover-title): Your Basement Fallout Shelter.
Blueprint for Survival No.1. (Ottawa: Produced by the Emergency Measures Organization of the
Privy Council, The Queen's Printer...1960). 8vo., orig. pictorial
wrappers, (36)pp. With a large foldout plan for building a fallout
shelter. Some rubbing to spine with light wear to the ends but
certainly very good.
With a preface by Prime Minister Diefenbaker, this booklet was
produced to provide substantial protection from radioactive fallout by
the building of family fallout shelters. ‘The shelter described in
this booklet, although not affording protection against the blast of a
nuclear explosion or the first that may result, will provide good
protection against more widespread radiation danger.'
WITH:

7. (CANADIANA/BOOK CATALOGUE). Some Choice Books 1910. London: The Mallach Book-Shop, 183 Dundas Street, 1910. This is in
fact the Canadian issue of the ‘Some Choice Books 1910' catalogue
issued by G.P. Putnam's Sons. 8vo., orig. decorated wrappers, 36pp.
Illustrated. Brown mark on the upper wrapper but o/w a near fine copy
of a scarce catalogue. Not in Voila.
This issue of the Putnam's catalogue distributed in Canada has a
first leaf and its conjugate which is slightly shorter than the other
pages and has the imprint/stamp of the Canadian bookseller, Mallach,
on the titlepage. The clue that it is Putnam's is the ‘Catalogues
Recently Listed' advert by them on the inner rear wrapper. One assumes
that the Putnam imprint was removed from some of the sheets, which
were replaced by a new leaf with the imprint of a Canadian bookshop,
in order to facilitate Canadian orders. We have not seen another
example of an American publisher's catalogue from this period with a
Canadian bookshop on the titlepage.

reverse contains information about Eaton's (clearly aimed at visitors)
and images of the interior of the Toronto stores and services offered,

(CANADIANA/FURS). Price List 1907 Bishop Fur Coats and Robes. Sandwich
Ontario Canada. (Windsor: Printed by Record Printing Co., 1907). Tall 12mo. (14.5
x 8.5cm), orig. printed wrappers, (20)pp. With three illustrations,
two inside and one on the rear wrapper. This is clearly a copy used by
a salesman or a wholesale distributer of some sort, as prices have been
written in fountain pen where they were lacking and price
changes/discount are also supplied in the margins. A touch of
rubbing o/w a near fine copy of a scarce publication from the Canadian
factory of J.H. Bishop Co. No copies were located in Voila, nor were
any other publications from this company.
In 1874, J.H. Best founded a tannery on the shores of the Detroit
River in Wyandotte, Michigan. The company imported raw skins from
around the world and turned out finished coats, robes and rugs. Fur
coats were made from the pelts of sheep, goats, bears, buffaloes,
wolves, beavers or raccoons. They also produced cloth coats with fur
linings of marmot, muskrat, mink, marten, sable and dog. The J. H.
Bishop Co. had ambitions to market and sell throughout the United
States and Canada. To this end, the company retained 10 travelling
salesmen. It also established offices in New York, Boston, Chicago and
Seattle, as well as a small factory in Sandwich, Ontario. In 1914,
the war in Europe caused a worldwide disruption in supply and demand.
Faced with a loss of markets, the decision was made to end operations.
This price list was produced by the factory in Sandwich, Ontario,
presumably to service the Canadian market. The booklet contains
general information on leather and furs as well as the proper way to
care for fur and leather coats.

10. (CHILDREN'S/RUSSIAN/SPACE). [All text in Cyrillic] KLUSHANTSEV,
Pavel. (To Other Planets). Title in Cyrillic: К другим планетам! (Leningrad: Detgiz, 1962). Second, revised edition. 4to., orig.
cloth backed pictorial paper boards, (78)pp. Profusely illustrated in
colour. Some wear to the edges of the boards but certainly a very good
copy of this Russian juvenile about space travel.
Pavel Vladimirovich Klushantsev [1910-1999] Russian cameraman, film
director, producer, screenwriter, and author who worked during the
Soviet Era. Klushantsev graduated from the Leningrad Fototechnikum in
1930 and worked as a cinematographer for four years. In 1934, he began
working at Lenfilm / Lennauchfilm, where he became a director and
producer, primarily making science educational films including his
visionary film – Road to the Stars (1957). His only feature film
was Planet of the Storms (1962). The film was subsequently re-edited and
expanded by Roger Corman for American distribution – as Voyage to the
Prehistoric Planet (1965) by Curtis Harrington, and as Voyage to the
Planet of Prehistoric Women (1968) by Peter Bogdanovich. In both these
versions, the original scenes drew acclaim.
In addition to his film work, Klushantsev was famous as the author of
popular juvenile science books. The above title is one such example,
first published in 1959, but re-issued in an updated version in 1962—
the updates are largely on the last leaf and cover the launches and
events that occurred since 1959.
