First edition in this format. 40 hand-coloured plates (measuring 22.5 x 14cm). 8vo., original green wrappers, with plates laid in, as issued. Upper wrapper detached, some wear to spine but the plates are about fine. In a contemporary cloth portfolio, leather spine, cloth, printed leather label on the upper cover, ties (as issued?). The portfolio has wear to the spine and lacking one tie, good only. Gimbel notes that this is a ‘portfolio of 40 handcoloured etchings, being faithful copies of Forrester's ‘Pickwickian' lithographs of 1837. These imitative etchings are believed to be the work of R.W. Pailthorpe. The title is taken from the outside of the front wrapper, although the original title ‘The Pickwickians' appears on the first print.' With one copy of this in auction records since the 1960s. Auction records also has one copy of Gimbel H1077 which is a different edition of the 40 plates. Gimbel H1079.
