Tall 8vo., bound in full contemporary dark green morocco, raised bands, elaborate gilt compartments, decorative borders in gilt & blind on the boards, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, with ‘SHOTOVER' stamped in gilt on the upper boards, xliv, 486; 487-1022; (2), (1)-548; 549- 1172pp. double columns (with an error in pagination in volume four (volume two) with pp. 529- 628 eliminated as issued. However, this is complete as issued, the collation is correct, and this is not lacking text). With 51 engraved plates and other illustrations in the text. Some foxing to the plates, ownership signature on the front free e/paper, a little minor rubbing to extremities but in fact this is an about fine copy in an attractive full morocco binding. While we have not been able to absolutely ascertain the origin of the "SHOTOVER" stamped on the upper boards, it seems probable that at one point that this work was part of the library of Shotover Park, the 18th-century manor house, farm and park in Oxfordshire. John Chalmers Morton [1821-1888], Scottish writer on agriculture. After completing his education by attending lectures by David Low at the University of Edinburgh, he assisted his father at the Whitfield Example Farm and joined the English Agricultural Society. In 1838 he was the founding editor of the Agricultural Gazette, which required him to relocate to London. In 1854 Morton was appointed to Low's position as a lecturer at Edinburgh when he retired. Morton was a prolific author about agriculture beginning with his editing of the above title, first published in 1855. The Cyclopedia was very well received with the reviewer for the London Economist noting "A more comprehensive work on British Agriculture, and one uniting so completely the practical and scientific knowledge of our best agriculturalists, has never before appeared." He also wrote the New Farmer's Almanac (1856-1870), A Handbook of Dairy Husbandry (1860), and he edited and contributed to Handbooks of the Farm (1881-4). Morton was also a frequent contributor to the journal of the Royal Agricultural Society. (ODNB; Allibone).

A blank memorandum book (7x13.5cm) shaped like a bag of fertilizer, with five introductory pages featuring useful information such as “Measures of Length”, “Liquid Measures”, “A Planter’s Guide”, and “Soil Analysis”. “National Feed Mix” is advertised on the back cover. A charming piece of ephemera in excellent condition.

This publication outlines the application and various uses of concrete on a farm, such as: bridges, barn floors, bases for machinery, basements, cisterns, cellar floors, house construction, dipping vats and tanks, foundations, hatchways, hog houses, milt houses, manure pits, septic tanks, stall floors, silos, etc. The work not only provides an overview and outlines the advantages of using concrete, but it also provides some instructions on how to use the concrete in the various projects.

Most likely this was a brochure for the Canadian market as it states that Simplicity goods are “sold exclusively in Canada by Eaton’s of Canada”.

Tall 8vo., orig. cloth-backed paper boards, printed paper spine label, 466pp. Front inner hinge cracked, a few marks to upper board, paper spine label chipped with loss of text, outer hinges rubbed, but certainly a better than very good copy. Jethro Tull [1674-1741] was a pioneering agriculturalist whose novel approach to farming helped to further the eighteenth-century British Agricultural Revolution. His Horse-Hoeing Husbandry was first published in 1731.

Co., 1892. 1 leaf stiff cardboard (15.5x17.5cm), colour-printed on both sides, with two holes punched (with cord for hanging), 12 separate leaves (one for each month) attached to recto with grommets. The recto shows three angelic children, one holding a rake; the verso shows an ornamental fan with five vignettes featuring farm equipment and a printed calendar. A fine example of a pretty calendar. At its peak the Walter A. Wood Mowing & Reaping Machine Company (1852-1924) was the largest farm machinery manufacturer in the world.

Stain on e/paper and titlepage and first few leaves of volume I, inner rear hinge of volume I cracked o/w a near fine set. John Wilson [1812-1888] agriculturist, educated at University College and in Paris where he studied medicine and chemistry. From 1846-1850 he was the Principal of the Royal Agricultural College and in 1854 he was elected Chair of Agriculture and Rural Economy at Edinburgh. Throughout his career he maintained ties with foreign agricultural societies and departments, particularly those in Canada, Austria, Denmark and Germany. Wilson was the author of several titles and the above “is still considered a standard work of reference and nothing better of its kind has ever appeared in agricultural literature.” (DNB) BM citing 1860.
