John Wilson [1812-1888] agriculturist, educated at University College and in Paris where he studied medicine and chemistry. From 1846-1850 he was the Principal of the Royal Agricultural College and in 1854 he was elected Chair of Agriculture and Rural Economy at Edinburgh. Throughout his career he maintained ties with foreign agricultural societies and departments, particularly those in Canada, Austria, Denmark and Germany. Wilson was the author of several titles and the above “is still considered a standard work of reference and nothing better of its kind has ever appeared in agricultural literature.” (DNB) BM citing 1860.
