2. (AFRICA). BANFIELD, Alexander Woods.
Life Among The Nupe Tribe.
Berlin, Ont: (Kitchener): Published H.S. Hallman, (1905). First
edition, wrapper issue. 4to., orig. heavy pictorial brown wrappers,
tied (as issued), 84pp. Profusely illustrated (photographs taken by
the author). A bit of occasional browning, crease to upper corner
running through the publication, spine has some wear but this is still
a better than very good copy of an uncommon work. Voila notes 1 copy
in Library and Archives Canada, while OCLC notes electronic resources
or microform only (from the copy in LAC).
Alexander Woods Banfield [1878-1949] Canadian missionary and
translator. Born in Quebec to Methodist parents, Banfield moved to
Toronto in 1880, where he practiced as a member of the Mennonite
Brethren in Christ with soon to be wife, Althea. Banfield joined MBiC
mission in the Sudan and was sent by the Sudan Interior Mission to
serve the Nupe people along the Niger River. There Banfield began the
life-long project to translate the Bible into Nupe (published 1953) as
well as a dictionary of the Nupe language. Banfield was joined by his
wife, Althea in Nigeria in 1905. In 1915 Banfield was appointed by the
British and Foreign Bible society as their West African Agent, which
required him to visit missions from the Congo to Senegal. In 1930 he
was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He returned to
Canada in 1930 and transferred his ordination to the Toronto
Conference of the United Church of Canada.
In 1905, Banfield published the above work, Life Among the Nupe Tribe,
which contained many of his photographs, accompanied by interpretive
text. The Royal Ontario Museum holds approx. 3,500 of Banfield’s
photographs and other items related to his work. A study of Banfield’s
collections and photographs noted ‘he had an unusual appreciation for
the skills and wisdom of the African'.

3. (AMERICAN PUBLISHER’S BINDING?).
Church Psalmist; Or Psalms and Hymns, For The Public, Social, and
Private Use of Evangelical Christians.
New York: Ivison & Phinney, 1854. Fortieth Edition (so stated). 12mo.
(11.5 x 8cm), bound in full brown pebbled morocco, raised bands, gilt
compartments, gilt borders and scroll-work on the boards, inner
dentelles gilt, a.e.g., 676pp. An about fine copy in what appears to
us to be a publisher's binding.
This has the look of a publisher's binding but I could not find any
advertisements for Ivison & Phinney that specifically gave ‘binding
options'. However, I did locate a full-page advertisement for Ivison,
a Scottish immigrant, who was trained as a book-binder so it seems in
the realm of possibility that his firm would also offer a binding
service. Either way, it is a lovely example of a 19th century American
leather binding.

4. (AMERICANA) GOODYEAR, C.W. (Charles Waterhouse).
Bogalusa Story.
Buffalo: Privately Printed, 1950. First edition. 4to., orig. rust
cloth, 208pp. With illustrations. Touch of browning to the e/papers,
some minor rubbing but o/w a near fine copy of a scarce book.
Bogalusa, Louisiana was founded by Buffalo lumber barons Frank Henry
Goodyear and Charles Waterhouse Goodyear. ‘In 1906 the Goodyears
formed the Great Southern Lumber Company to harvest the rich and
largely untapped timber resources of southeastern Louisiana and
southern Mississippi. They also ordered the construction of the
90-mile New Orleans Great Northern Railroad to provide access to this
region and transportation for processed timber. Known as “Magic City”
because of its growth, Bogalusa had about 20,000 residents by 1920 and
promoted itself as one of the most progressive cities in the South.
The rapid depletion of the area’s timber resources led to the closing
of the Great Southern mill in 1938 and the subsequent decline of the
town.’ (Library of Congress).
The Goodyears were the world’s largest manufacturers of hemlock
lumber. Between 1901 and 1905 they expanded into the South, purchasing
300,00 acres of yellow pine timberland in southeastern Louisiana.
Their Great Southern Lumber Company sawmill was the largest in the
world, and the company town of Bogalusa developed as a result.

Both these volumes are part of the re-issue of Stanford’s
Compendium of Geography and Travel. The volume on Canada and
Newfoundland was first published in 1897 and was by S.E. Dawson. As
Ami, the editor of the second edition notes in his preface,
‘...the chapters dealing with the geographical features of the
provinces of the Dominion and Newfoundland have been practically all
rewritten and entirely new chapters prepared dealing with the new
provinces organized in 1905 and the extension of three old provinces
in 1912.’ Both volumes contain copious information relating to the

7. AUCHINCLOSS, W.S. (William Stuart).
The Book of Daniel Unlocked. Introduction by A.H. Sayce.
New York: For Sale by D. Van Nostrand Company..., 1905. First edition.
With a presentation inscription from the author. (While the preface is
dated 1902, we cannot locate any edition of this book before 1905 in
OCLC or elsewhere.) Tall 8vo., orig. blue cloth lettered in white with
a ‘key and padlock’ in gilt on the upper cover and spine, (135)pp.
With a folding table and a chart, and with a large folding chart in a
pocket at the front. This has a monogram ‘Robert Louis Scott’ stamped
on the rear board, which we do not believe was part of the original
binding design-- in fact it has the appearance of a bookplate, so it
is likely an ownership stamp of some sort. Later ownership signature,
some very light wear to the foot of the spine o/w a very nice copy of
an uncommon book.
William Stuart Auchincloss (1824-1928) American civil and
mechanical engineer. In addition to works relating to his profession,
Auchincloss also published works related to his travels and his
biblical studies. ‘This work explores and interprets the biblical Book
of Daniel, focusing on its prophetic significance and historical
context, particularly as it relates to the foundations of Christian
belief. It aims to present a comprehensive understanding of the text,
arguing for a divine foundation and the antiquity of its numerals and
prophecies. The opening of the book sets a scholarly tone, with
Auchincloss confidently asserting that his study is based on the
conviction that the Book of Daniel is indeed the Word of God. He
discusses key themes such as the significance of numerals in Hebrew
tradition and emphasizes the sidereal year as the basis for all
calculations. The introduction and preface describe not only the
historical significance of Daniel's prophecies but also their
relevance to the Jewish and early Christian contexts, hinting at the
intersections of faith and prophecy that underpin the whole narrative.
As Daniel and his companions are introduced, the reader gets a glimpse
into their trials and faithfulness while in captivity, setting the
stage for the deeper explorations of their visions and the overarching
divine plan that unfolds throughout the text.’ (Project Gutenberg).

A Reply To Sir Henry Clinton’s Narrative, Wherein His Numerous
Errors are Pointed Out, and the Conduct of Lord Cornwallis Fully
Vindicated From All Aspersion: Including the Whole of the Public and

and His Lordship; As Also Intercepted Letters From General George
Washington.
London: Printed for R. Faulder,...J. Debrett..., 1783. Second edition.
Tall 8vo., 19th century half calf, plain boards, raised bands, gilt

(110 blank)pp. Rubberstamp on the rear pastedown and e/paper, the last
leaf has a moderate damp stain in the outer margin (not affecting

a scarce book. Sabin 16814.
The Clinton-Cornwallis controversy began after the defeat of the
British defeat at Yorktown in 1781 at the hands of the Americans. A
debate began almost immediately as to which commander-- Sir Henry
Clinton as British Commander-in-Chief or Charles Earl Cornwallis, as
commander of the British army in the South--was responsible for the
British defeat. Cornwallis claimed he followed orders issued by
Clinton to entrench at Yorktown and wait for relief by sea, while
Clinton had issued no such order, though he had divided the British
forces in North America. ‘In truth, the Royal Navy had let down both
army commanders as they had not put enough ships in commission, and
could not maintain control of the shipping lanes. Cornwallis and
Clinton allowed their personal animosities to affix the blame on each
other, rather than the navy. Clinton fired the first published
‘volley’ issuing a pamphlet before the end of 1781. He published a
longer narrative in 1782. Cornwallis responded in kind, answering
Clinton’s narrative, causing Clinton to publish yet another pamphlet.
In 1783, an anonymous Cornwallis supporter published the above work,
under the pseudonym of ‘Themistocles’, in which he pointed out the
errors in Clinton’s narrative. The controversy continued until
Clinton’s death in 1795, but the verdict was clear as Clinton never
held another command while Cornwallis became the Governor-General in
India.

'This informational booklet was issued in conjunction with the
Canadian film, ‘The Sins of the Father’, The first feature-length
sound film dealing with this No. 1 health problem to be written and
produced in Canada.’ The film was made with the co-operation of the
federal Minister of Health, Paul Martin, along with the Health
Ministers of the provinces.
Produced by Larry Cromes, directed by Phil Rosen and Richard J.
Jarvis, screenplay by Gordon Burwash, the film starred Austin Willis,
Joy Lafleur, John Pratt, Phyllis Carter and others. The film’s plot
shows the effect of syphilis in a small Canadian town. Ben Edwards is
a crusading doctor who tries to pass a public health law, against the
hypocritical opposition of the leaders of the community who profit
from prostitution and slums. Finally the opponents find out that they
themselves have syphilis and have transmitted it to their own
children.
