(AMERICAN PUBLISHER'S BINDING?). Church Psalmist; Or Psalms and Hymns, For The Public, Social, and Private Use of Evangelical Christians.
New York: Ivison & Phinney, 1854. Fortieth Edition (so stated). 12mo. (11.5 x 8cm), bound in full brown pebbled morocco, raised bands, gilt compartments, gilt borders and scroll-work on the boards, inner dentelles gilt, a.e.g., 676pp. An about fine copy in what appears to us to be a publisher's binding.
This has the look of a publisher's binding but I could not find any advertisements for Ivison & Phinney that specifically gave ‘binding options'. However, I did locate a full-page advertisement for Ivison, a Scottish immigrant, who was trained as a book-binder so it seems in the realm of possibility that his firm would also offer a binding service. Either way, it is a lovely example of a 19th century American leather binding.
