COBB, Humphrey.
Advance Copy of a Novel (As Yet Untitled). [Paths of Glory.] New York: Viking, 1935. Advance Uncorrected proof of 'Paths of Glory.' 8vo., orig. printed cream wrappers. Spine slightly browned with creasing o/w a very nice example of this proof. The publishers' blubs on the upper wrapper advertises a contest asking readers to submit titles for Cobb's novel. 'The Viking Press will pay $50 for the best title submitted on or before April 10, whether it is used or not.' The information includes names of the judges, terms of use of the title, and states that only 500 proofs will be distributed--although the add 'your copy may be passed on to other readers, and each reader may submit a title.' The publisher urges contestants to submit titles that are 'arresting, appropriate, original, easy to remember, and should not give such information as to lessen the reader's interest in the conclusion of the story.' According to a piece in the New York Times (April 23rd, 1935), the winning title was announced as 'Day of Glory'. However, the article indicates that the name 'may be changed' as 'the Book Club is not entirely satisfied with it.'
