ELLIS, Edward S. The Phantom Auto. Illustrated by Louis R. Dougherty.
Philadelphia: John C. Winston Company, (1908). First edition. 8vo., orig. blue-grey cloth with a pictorial decoration in black and red depicting an automobile with ‘bat wings' protruding from the wheels, pictorial endpapers, 321pp. With four black and white plates (including frontis). Small mark on the upper board o/w an about fine copy in the scarce pictorial d/w, which has some wear to the spine ends and a hole near the top of the spine but is still a much better than very good copy. It would appear that the publisher was unconcerned about the dustwrapper design reflecting the subject matter of the story as this d/w shows a picture of an indigenous boy with musket on the front-- it would seem that Winston used the design from one of the other series written by Ellis, most likely the ‘Deerfoot' series. $275
