Manrique, Sebastien Portuguese missionary and traveller. Fray Sebastien Manrique travelled around various countries of the East for about sixteen years from 1628 to 1643. The main purpose of Manrique's travel to the East was to preach Christianity and inspect the Missions abroad. The Augustan Church entrusted the task to him. During the course of his travel to India he came to Bengal and reached Dhaka in September 1640 to inspect the Portuguese Catholic Church. Manrique provides a graphic description of the population, wealth and political importance of Dhaka. Indeed his is the most important early accounts about the growth and development of the Mughal city of Dhaka. Manrique's accounts also provide a glimpse into the political, economic and social life of Bengal and above all about the famous muslin products of Bangladesh. After Dhaka Manrique went to Diang and Chittagong to see the Portuguese establishments there. He left India in 1641 and reached home in July 1643.

This copy has been professionally recased with repairs to the spine ends, inner hinges reinforced, some rubbing but certainly a very good copy. The Norwegian, naturalist, anthropologist and explorer Carl Lumholtz spent four years in Queensland from 1880. First based at Gracemere, he travelled in western Queensland, then to the Valley of Lagoons and finally to the Herbert River area of northern Queensland where he spent long periods travelling, camping and hunting with the Aborigines, in many cases with groups previously untouched by white people. He collected four new species of mammal including Dendrolagus lumholtzii, a Tree Kangaroo, and Pseudocheiris herbertensis, the — Herbert River Ringtail Possum. His account of his travels, Among Cannibals, contains detailed observations of Aboriginal life. Later he became important as an anthropologist in Mexico and Arizona, then as explorer, naturalist and anthropologist in two years’ travel in Borneo. The Lumholtz National Park in the Herbert River area, including Wallaman Falls; it is a fitting memorial to him. (Queensland Naturalist, 2006).

Tall 8vo., orig. green cloth stamped in black and gilt with a recessed inlay binding on the upper cover consisting of purple cloth stamped in gilt and lettered in red and green, A.E.G., 48pp. Inner hinges reinforced, blind stamp on a couple of pages but not any of the plates, a touch of wear to spine ends but still a fine, attractive, elaborately decorated Victorian binding.
Maclean p.204 notes that "this is one of the quarto volumes containing Benjamin Fawcett's color plates and the increased size of illustration has not diminished their delicacy." Maclean also states that the drawings for the above and many other of Fawcett's books were made by A.F. Lydon [1836-1917] "who was the mainstay of Fawcett's art department for about 30 years, until he left for London in 1883."
