Edinburgh: Published by Banks & Co., nd. (188-?) Oblong 8vo., orig. flexible blue cloth lettered in gilt on the upper cover, 15 engraved plates on 30pp. Some foxing but o/w near fine.
We have also had a cloth issue of this item in purple cloth with 26 engravings; probably a more expensive issue. The popularity of the small steel engraved vignette lead to their use in guidebooks; without text in collections or singly as embellishments on note paper. One publisher, Rock & Co., was responsible for producing 7000 such vignettes over a 30 year period, making these vignettes the Victorian equivalent of the picture postcard. Several other firms issued similar works though none on the scale of Rock & Co. As late as the 1890's, Banks & Co., was issuing collections such as the above title, a set of anonymous plates. Their value is in the pictorial record that the vignettes supply of the landscapes and townscapes of the time. (Russell: History of British Topographical Prints).

This is a peculiar copy with the 26pp. tract dealing with Boscobel and the preservation of Charles II after the battle of Worcester and the information about Charles II escape after the battle and his subsequent adventures. However, this copy has been augmented by the owner and rebound in cont. cloth. It contains a few illustrations (Charles II, Cromwell, etc) but it also contains 3 pages of handwritten notes, 8pp. with clippings from the "Leamington Spa Courier" dated 1875 dealing with Charles II escape.
