A series of letters provide the authors account of his travels, beginning with his departure from Dover, through Calais, Montrueil, Amiens, Paris, Lyons, Avignon, Marseilles, Montpelier, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Orleans. Throughout the letters the author gives a description of the scenery, architecture, arts, education, accommodations and constantly compares them with their counterpart in England. (in almost every case the English equivalent is preferable and superior, particularly noticeable in the comparison of Paris to London.) The letters conclude with a rather gruesome description of a public execution in Orlean.

This copy has the translator's "Lettre au citoyen Lecuoteulyx" which Brunet states was removed from some copies because it was full of Republican ideas which could be expressed in An VII but not in An VIII. The original work was published in 1795 by Roscoe as was praised for its "Grecian style of simplicity, judicious candour, without personal bias" by Horace Walpole, who also noted that "Roscoe is ....by far the best of our historians, both for beauty of style and for deep reflctions; and his translations of poetry are equal to the original."
