Madame de Sevinge [1626-1696] French writer. Orphaned at age 6, she was raised by her uncle, Christophe de Coulanges, in Brittany where she received an education usually reserved for boys. Sh developed a love of Latin, Spanish and Italian literature. At 18 she married Henri de Sevigne and the marriage was neither a long, nor a happy one. After he husband was killed in a duel in 1651, she began to take part, by letter, in the intellectual debates of the age. She had a wide circle of friends and left a huge number of letters, which were written with wit, warmth and charm, revealing her humour and sensitivity. Her letters provide a vivid commentary on the manners, intrigues, values and daily life during the reign of Louis XV. The most admired of her letters are those written to her daughter, which have been described as "loving, intimate, possessive and introspective."
