BURNET, Gilbert.
Bishop Burnet's History of His Own Time. Volume I: From the Restoration of King Charles II to the Settlement of King William and Queen Mary at the Revolution. Volume II: From the Revolution to the Conclusion of the Treaty of Peace at Utrecht, in the Reign of Queen Anne........... London: Printed for Thomas Ward, 1724, 1734. In two volumes. First edition. Folio, full late 19th century calf, raised bands, leather spine labels, (xvi), 836; (xxii), 765, (1 blank). There is some dampstaining through volume two, mostly marginal but in the text from pp. 680 to the end, it is not severe but certainly visible; wear to corners, some rubbing but certainly a very good copy. The celebrated "History of His Own Time" was left in Ms. at the time of Burnet's death in 1715 with instructions that it not be published until six years later. However, volume one did not appear until 1724 and volume two was delayed until 1734. "This interesting work has been much abused by the Tories, and it has been a convenient target for the wits of such critics as Swift, Pope and others. ....we avow the opinion that Burnet was one of the most veracious chroniclers in the language." (Allibone).
