London: Printed for T. Davies, 1771. In two volumes. First edition in English. Tall, 8vo., full contemporary calf, raised bands, gilt compartments, there are leather spine labels which have been added later (early 20th century), x, 512; (ii), 403, (1)errata, (42)pp.table of contents. With an engraved frontispiece in volume one, a portrait of Cellini. Volume one has been professionally rebacked, (not recently), with the original spine laid down with the original e/papers, the outer hinges of volume two are cracked and tender, wear to the spine ends of volume two, some general rubbing but this is still a very good copy.
Nugent begins the preface to his translation "The great encouragement which the productions of who profess the art of design have lately met with among the politer part of this learned nation; induces me to hope that the following translation of the Life of Benvenuto Cellini, one of the chief ornaments of the illustrious Florentine School, will meet with the public approbation. Besides the novelty and variety of adventures, which recommends the work, it has another great advantage, that of being perfectly authentic, and written by the author himself at an age of maturity, with a view to the instruction and improvement of others, in the several branches of jewelling and sculpture, of which his was so complete a master......"

Matthew Pilkington [1701-1774] Irish minister and art historian. The Gentleman's and Connoisseur's Dictionary of Painters was the first handbook to connoisseurship and artists' biography written in English. Although not a work of scholarship, it is reflective of the age and aspirations of eighteenth and nineteenth century art-going British public. Pilkington dwells on Italian painters, at the time fashionable, and somewhat neglecting the Dutch and Flemish who were not yet as revered. His advice on the art markets of both the British Isles and the Netherlands and Belgium is an illuminating period piece. The Pilkington Dictionary when through numerous revisions and was the standard for connoisseurs and neophytes for much of the nineteenth century. The publication was taken over by Richard A. Davenport (c.1777-1852) and last appeared in 1857.
