Fredrich von Raumer (1781-1873) was a German historian, professor of political science and history at Berlin, who held the chair until 1847. Raumer travelled extensively; to Venice in 1815, Switzerland and Italy in 1816-17, England in 1835, Italy in 1839 and finally to America in 1843. These visits led to the publication of several works including the above title.

This edition in an abridgement of Antoine Bruzen de la Martinere's "Geographical Dictionary" translated from the English of Laurence Echard by Vosgien. The three folding maps are of France; Europe and the World; the last presented in two hemispheres and shows Australia.
