First French edition. 4to., full contemporary calf, raised bands, gilt compartments, (xxiv), 478; (ii), 462pp. There is 3 inch tear in the folding map without loss, four pages have ink notes in the margin in a contemporary hand, there is dampstaining to the top corner of pp.429-478 of volume one not affecting the text but affecting the two plates at rear, spine ends chipped away, short splits in the top of the outer hinges but this is in fact a very good copy.
"An enthusiast in the study of natural history from his youth, the author was overjoyed at being enabled to proceed to the Cape, through the influence of his friend Captain Ekeberg with the Royal Swedish East India Company. He served as a tutor and interpreter at False Bay. He mad several excursions into the country in search of natural history specimens, and he gives some valuable information respecting Cape Town and the neighbouring districts at this period.......In 1775 he made an expedition into the interior penetrating through Kaffraria as far as 'Bruntjes Hoogte' and the narrative of their travels is interesting and instructive...The author relates many incidents illustrating the hospitality of the Dutch farmers ...and makes allusions to the cruelty of the treatment of the slaves by the lower classes of the colonists...." (Mendelssohn).

Anne Louise de Stael-Holstein sent a fascinating childhood at her mothers salon which was a celebrated centre of intellectual activity, hosting among others, Tallyrand and Diderot. After an unhappy marriage de Stael-Holstein's own salon became a meeting place for those who shared her antipathy to Napoleon and the Empire. He book "De L'Allemagne" was seized by authorities and she fled into exile, travelling extensively in Germany, Italy, Austria, Sweden & England. She "holds an important place in the history of French thought with her belief in 'perfectibility' and the notion that the human race is advancing towards perfection." She wrote two novel, the above title is the second and the fundamental theme of both concerns the solitariness of the intellectual woman, the conflict between the thirst for fame and the longing for affection.
