Mary Anne Schimmelpenninck, English writer only child of strict Quaker parents. Mary Anne's literary aspirations were encouraged by visitors to her family home including Watt, Edgeworth and Mrs. Barbauld, who Mary Anne stayed with in London. She married and devoted time to teaching children and various charities, but financial difficulties and a rift with her family caused her to turn to writing to earn a living. Her friend, Hannah More, sent Mary Anne writings about the Port Royalists, and in 1813 she published a compilation based on one of those volumes s the above "Tour...." This contained a translation with notes by Schimmelpenninck and "when finished, presented a ensemble very different from the original." "Also included were biographical pieces and a sketch of Port Royal." A second edition was soon called for. "Besides displaying a thorough knowledge of languages, and of the bearings of the Jesuits and Jansenist controversy, it is an excellent narrative."
