First edition. 12mo., full cont. calf, raised bands, leather spine label, iv, (5)-128, (129)-261pp. Bookplate, brown staining to the lower corners of the first 59pp. (not affecting text), stain on pp. 60-64 larger but the text is still quite legible, stain on the titlepage of volume two affecting the publishers imprint, but still a very good copy.
A series of letters provide the authors account of his travels, beginning with his departure from Dover, through Calais, Montrueil, Amiens, Paris, Lyons, Avignon, Marseilles, Montpelier, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Orleans. Throughout the letters the author gives a description of the scenery, architecture, arts, education, accommodations and constantly compares them with their counterpart in England. (in almost every case the English equivalent is preferable and superior, particularly noticeable in the comparison of Paris to London.) The letters conclude with a rather gruesome description of a public execution in Orlean.

Tall 8vo., orig. blue cloth, (xxvii), 443; (xix), 466; xix, 578pp. Inner hinges cracked, lacking rear e/papers in volume one but still a very good copy. Julia Pardoe [1806-1862] British novelist, travel and short story writer, biographer. Pardoe's literary career began early as she published a book of poetry when she was 13. She wrote accounts of her travels, including interesting works on Turkey and Portugal. She turned to fiction to make money to "support poor relations" but the extra work eventually put a strain on her health. "Although uneven in quality, many of her novels and short stories are at their best in their sharp observations of the greed and affectation of the middle class and fashionable society." Her diffuse treatment of Marie de Medici in the above work, combats other historians critical and unsympathetic portrayal of her.
