Marie Konstantinova Bashirtseff [1860-1884] Russian painter and diarist, born in Poltava Province. She spent most of her short life living in France. Given a private education she mastered several languages but her ambition was to sing. However in 1877 her voice failed, so she decided to study painting with Bastien-Lepage in the women's class at the Academie Julien in Paris. She held her first exhibition in the Salon in 1880 and in 1883 her painting "Jean and Jacques" won the award. She died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-four. Bashkirtseff's diary is one of the most remarkbable "journaux intimmes" of the 19th century. Started in Nice in 1873, it ends only 11 days before her death. She began for "her own satisfaction" but before long it evolved into "her intentional means of leaving her imprint on posterity." It contains descriptions of childhood feelings, fantasies, ambitions and an analysis of adolescent sensitivity, which combine to paint a vivid and intimate psychological self portrait. As well, it provides an accurate portrayal of the practical everyday trials of a female painter.
