Sprawling note across the rear wrapper, a bit of rubbing o/w a very nice copy.
While the intention of this elaborate publicity publication was no doubt serious, it is impossible for anyone familiar with Evelyn Waugh's 'The Loved One' to take it at all seriously. From the introductory piece 'A First Step Up Toward Heaven' by Bruce Barton, which includes the pithy quotation 'Life is ever lord of death, And love can never lose its own', the reader becomes acquainted with the smarmy, patronizing tone that pervades the entire booklet. The compilers attempt to lull potential customers into a sense of peace and tranquility as 'no signs of sorrow linger in this beautiful park.' The soothing dialogue is accompanied throughout by pictures of lavish gardens, the 'Church of the Little Flowers,' stained glass windows, reproductions of art work such as Michelangelo's David and Moses, and the Hall of History. Without doubt, the epitome of bad taste are the descriptions and illustrations of 'Babyland' and 'Lullaby-land', which includes a photo of 'Babyland at Christmas' when the graves of children are decorated with miniature white plastic Christmas trees, and statues such as 'The Duck Baby', 'The Frog Baby' and the 'Happy Baby.' One glance through this publication makes clear that Waugh did not have to exaggerate much when he chose Forest Lawn as the model for his cemetery in 'The Loved One.'
