Gilpin took over a school at Cheam and proved to be a proponent of educational reform, substituting fines instead of corporal punishment. During the long summer vacations, Gilpin undertook a series of sketching tours by which he has become known; picturesque beauties of the various parts of England, Scotland and Wales. These consist of a Northern Tour; Southern Tour; Western Tour; Eastern Tour; Scottish Tour and the River Wye. The various publications were all well received, 'all his volumes are accompanied by engravings in acquatint executed by himself with the taste and feelings of a painter. He has in some measure created a new kind of tour....all his works abound with ingenious reflections....' (DNB).
