James Kirke Paulding (1778-1860) American naval official and author. After the Revolution several English writers visited America, producing gossipy, unfavourable accounts of the new nation. Paulding became one of several American writers who produced works in reply to the English accounts. Paulding wrote 5 works including the above, expressing his antipathy for England and the English.
