An account of Fox's experience in Melanesia as a missionary school master beginning in 1902. Fox was adopted by the Arosi tribe and lived as a member of the chief's household, taking part in the everyday life of the village and acquiring a unique knowledge of the Arosi language and customs. Fox was forced to remain in hiding throughout the Japanese occupation of the islands during WWII.
