Thick 8vo., leather spine, cloth, xl, (2), (1)-1,1139, 32pp.ads. With 12 chromolithograph plates. This copy has been professionally rebacked with a red leather spine and the remainder of the original spine laid down, new e/papers, but this is still a better than very good copy of one of the most famous books on household management and cookery.
Isabella Mary Beeton (1836 – 1865), known as Mrs Beeton, was an English journalist, editor and writer. Her name is particularly associated with her first book, the above title, first published in 1861. It contained over 900 recipes and the remainder provided advice on fashion, child care, animal husbandry, poisons, the management of servants, science, religion, first aid, and the importance of the use of local and seasonal produce.
