DOYLE, Arthur Conan. The Poison Belt. With 16 Illustrations by Harry Rountree.
Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, (1913). First Canadian edition (sheets of the first English edition with a cancel title with the Canadian imprint). With two additional leaves (4)pp. laid in, which comprise the English titlepage/imprint. 8vo., original blue cloth with pictorial decoration in black on the upper cover and the spine, spine lettered in gilt, cover in black, (x), (1)-199, (200 blank). With 16 illustrations by Harry Rountree. A touch of rubbing to the foot of the spine, slight soiling to the rear board but in fact an about fine copy.
Given the fact that this is made up of the English sheets with a title tipped onto a stub, it would indicate that the book was probably done entirely in Britain and shipped to Canada. However, this copy has a curious addition that provides additional evidence as to the methods used to issue Canadian editions of this period--laid in are two additional leaves (4pp) consisting of the English titlepage and imprint. This suggests that rather than print and tip in the new titlepage in Britain, the book was shipped here, whereupon the title was cancelled and replaced for the Canadian market. Whether this was an oversight or not, it is interesting evidence relating to the manufacture and issuing of Canadian editions during this period. It is the only such evidence that I have encountered in 50 years of specializing in Canadian editions.
