Mary Margaret McBride (1899-1976) was an American interview host and writer, whose popular radio shows spanned more than 40 years. She began her radio career in NYC in 1934 with a daily women's advice show, with her persona as “Martha Deane”, “a kind grandmother with a Missouri drawl. As ‘Deane' she also was the women's page editor for the Newspaper Enterprise Association Syndicate. In 1937 she abandoned her ‘Deane' persona when she began a radio show on CBS, interviewing well-known figures in the world of arts, entertainment, and politics. In the 1940s the audience for her daily women's advice show numbered close to 8 million, and she was carried on most of the major networks. In the 1940s her shows had a broad range of guests, and during World War II on her NBC show, she began ‘breaking the color line' mixing in African American guests. “ Much of her later work was done in collaboration with her manager and partner, Stella Karn. “McBride and Karn made a name for themselves as pioneers in the field of broadcasting, and also as trailblazers for the future of lesbian and bisexual journalists.”
