“For generations, everyone in France read La Dot de Suzette. This slim novel, published anonymously… was readily available and frequently reprinted. There were cheap editions and expensive ones, and translations too. Mothers were not afraid to give this virtuous love story, which extolled among other things obedience, gratitude, and charity, to their daughters”. The Eighteenth Century: a Current Bibliography.
