(SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE BINDING). FEIBLEMAN, Peter. Death of Danaus (From Strangers and Graves).
Montreal: Editions Saul Shapiro, 1966. First separate edition (printed in an unknown number). This story appeared as one of four stories published in 1966 in From Strangers and Graves. Publisher's copy with his bookplate on the front free e/paper. Tall 8vo., bound in full crimson morocco, gilt design featuring two sets of four vertical lines on either side of two intersecting diagonal lines on the boards, inner dentelles replicate the vertical line pattern, marble paper free e/papers, a.e.g., by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, 83pp. A fine copy in a cloth slipcase.
A contemporary reviewer, Wilfrid Sheed, writing for Life Magazine noted that of the four novellas making up this novel, Death of Danaus is somewhat different from the others. ‘The Death of Danaus is about homelessness. A father and daughter live together in a glass cocoon. He has devoted himself to protecting her from pain (life), and turning her into a perfect lady (monster) with predictably ghoulish results for the two of them...' (Life Magazine. October 7, 1966). This publication done by Montreal collector Saul Shapiro is not listed in OCLC or Voilia. Given Shapiro's penchant for fine bindings, it is entirely possible that he had this story from Strangers and Graves printed for himself and bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, thereby making it a unique copy .
