(TRADE CATALOGUE/MCLELLAN MOSHER AND CO.)
(Half-title reads): List of Legal Blanks and Catalogue of Office Supplies. There are in fact two separate titlepages within the publication: Legal Blank List: 1. Legal Blanks. II. Court Terms. III. Maine Reports, Text Books & c., IV. Office supplies. Section IV: Office Supplies has its own title page reading: Catalogue of Office Supplies. The imprint is the same on both titlepages: McLellan, Mosher & Co., Portland Maine, 1889. (Upper wrapper reads) McLellan Mosher and Co. Law Stationers. Legal Blanks: Tall 8vo., orig. wrappers printed in red and black, 48pp. (continuous pagination). Profusely illustrated. Some browning to interior tabs, hole punched in upper left corner for hanging, but in fact a near fine copy of a very scarce trade catalogue. OCLC does not note any trade catalogues from Mclellan Mosher and Co., and the only publications listed with them as the publisher are work relating to Maine.
Prior to his involvement with the Mosher Press, Thomas Bird Mosher was one of the principals with McLellan Mosher and Co., (1882-1889) and was the owner of its successor, Thomas B. Mosher Company (1885-1889). In his article ‘A Little Bit Can Go A Long Way' the noted Mosher Press collector, Phil Bishop, notes that ‘both companies were wholesale stationers, lithographers, law booksellers and manufacturers, and both operated out of 37 Exchange St in Portland, Maine....The manufacture of stationary, law and blank books proved to be an important training ground for Mosher's ability to spatially lay out pages, and to work with local typesetters, printers, and binders to achieve certain results.'
On page 3 there is a printed notice from McLellan, Mosher & Co., Law Publishers noting that they listed their first Legal Blank list 4 years ago but believe the increased demand warrants a second edition. The note that they have recently purchased the entire series of Legal blanks published by Messrs. Stevens & Jones, so ‘we are enabled in this list to consolidate the largest number of forms ever issued by any Law Book and Stationary house in Maine.' They also note that they have provided the Terms of Court for the State but they do not note the list of Law Publications that is present on pp.13-16.
The remainder of this publication contains a Catalogue of Office Supplies, including account books, blotting pads and paper, various types and shades of paper, as well as other supplies such as boxes, pens, pencils, pen and pencil holders, scales, filing boxes, desk racks, calendars, seals and wax, sealing presses, tape, and numerous other office supplies. Products are illustrated with prices.
