De Jouy [1764-1846] led an active life as an officer and later as a politician before dedicating himself to literary pursuits in 1799. His first works were rather indecorous novelettes, published under the title "Galeries des Femmes." He then turned to writing "reflections" on various subjects, which first appeared in periodicals and were later collected as "L'Hermite en Chousee d'Antin" (1812-1814) and the above in 1816. These works were very successful and established a reputation for de Jouy as a great moral authority. $650
