Londres (actually Paris): (Clousier...), 1784. First edition. 12mo., full cont. calf, leather spine label, (x), (1)-270pp. Inner front hinge starting, 1 1/2" split in outer front hinge but still quite strong, small hole in rear spine gutter but in fact a very good copy.
Charles Villette [1736-1793] French writer and politician. Villette took part in the Seven Years War, and then returned to Paris in 1763 where he "made many enemies by his insufferable manners." Villette became friends with Voltaire, who referred to Villette as his protege and wished to make a poet of him. On Voltaire's advice, Villette married Mademoiselle De Variscourt, but the marriage was an unhappy one. During the Revolution, Villette wrote revolutionary articles in "Chronique de Paris." "He had the courage to censure the September massacres and vote for the imprisonment, not the death of Louis XVI. " In 1784 he published the above title. $400
