GRECE, Charles F.
Facts And Observations Respecting Canada, And The United States of America: Affording a Comparative View Of The Inducements To Emigration Presented In Those Countries. To Which Is Added An Appendix of Practical Instructions To Emigrant Settlers In The British Colonies. London: Printed for J. Harding, ... 1819. First edition. Tall 8vo., rebound in contemporary cloth backed blue printed boards, (printed information on the upper board relates to 'W. Kempson's Circulating Library, Opposite the Church, Chertsey...' (xvi), 172, 4pp.ads. Contemporary ownership signature on the title, bookplates outlining 'Terms and Conditions' for subscription to the lending library pasted on the front and rear pastedowns, corners worn, spine ends chipped with ?527? in ink at the foot but this is still a very good copy in a very unusual lending library binding. The author, a farm near Montreal came to Canada from England about 1803 and after 1807 engaged in experimental agriculture. This work includes the author's selections from his Essays on Canadian Husbandry. Rather than the printed lending library labels often found on ex-library copies, this book has a contemporary binding of cloth backed printed boards, clearly done for this specific lending library in order to designate their ownership of the volume. The upper covers erves as an advertisement for the library and its services, reading in part: 'The Book Belongs to W. Kempson's Circulating Library... Of who may be had Books in every Class of Literature, in Plain or Elegant Bindings... Music Carefully Repaired and Bound. Stationery and Drawing materials of every description on the most moderate terms.....'
