"The trio" as they were called, are probably the best known 20th century missionaries. They worked extensively with the China Inland Mission and in 1923 the received permission to follow the desert trade routes in order to take the gospel to the scattered oases of the Gobi. During the next 15 years they crossed the desert four times, "to and fro they trekked by cart, by camel and on foot, visiting the bazaars and oases of central Asia, meeting many people of different races." Not just missionaries, they also explored, and on their return to England were invited to lecture at universities and societies as they had gathered information of interest to the biographer, philologist and archaeologist." $125 CAD
