ROBERTS, (Frederick) Field Marshall Lord Roberts of Khandahar. Forty-One Years In India From Subaltern To Commander-in-Chief. By...... London: Richard Bentley And Son, 1897. In two volumes. Fourth Edition (so stated on the verso of the halftitle of volume 1) Tall thick 8vo., orig. blue cloth with gilt decoration in the centre of the upper board, xx, 511; xii,522, 64pp.ads. One folding plate has a tape repair to the verso which is not on the back of the plan itself but rather on the portion attaching into the book; some light rubbing to spine ends and corners but in fact a better than very good but not quite near fine copy. "Lord Roberts has written a book that will attract, and indeed has already attracted, a very considerable amount of attention. He and his father spent nearly ninety years in India. Of these almost fifty belong to his father, while the remaining forty-one have been spent there by himself, and cover the periods of the Mutiny and the Second Campaign in Afghanistan, during which he made his own celebrated march from Kabul to Kandahar. The book is essentially a soldier's book, and ought to be read by every young ambitious soldiers who wishes to understand the secret success in the profession of arms...." He later served with the 87th in the second campaign of the Ghoorkha War, and served at the siege of Hattrass and was involved in the Mahratta and Pinaree War of 1817-18.
