The author was a Scottish journalist who lived in Canada for several years, working at a Toronto newspaper and travelling throughout Canada and the United States. He went to work for the London Morning Chronicle for who he undertook travels in 1846-7 that form the basis of this book. However, he left this job in 1849 when the Chronicle indicated its opposition to the Rebellion Losses Bill in Canada. His descriptions of the social conditions and mores of the people he met, the topography of the country and the political and economic environment are excellent. He also reports on the Congressional debates regarding the Oregon question.
