"After a somewhat disreputable yourth, during which he bacame known of for his Canzone de' baci, he secured the powerful patronage of Cardinal Aldobrandini, whom he accompanied from Rome to Ravenna and Turin. An edition of his poems, La Lira, was published at Venice 1602-1614. His ungoverned pen and disordered life compelled him to leave Turin and take refuge from 1615 to 1622 in Paris, where he was favourably recognized by Marie de' Medici. The licenc, extravagance and concetis of Marini, the chief of the school of Secentisti, were characteristic of a period of literary decadence." (11th Brit).

(This was done by the Bondoni Press in 1786 as a 4to; in 1787 there was an 8vo version done by Reale.) 4to., full contemporary vellum, leather spine labels, (12), 130, (2)pp. [ 6 leaves, a-q4, r2 with r2 a blank] Mark from the removal of bookplate on the front pastedown, covers are warped outward with a 7" split on the front cover at the edge, some soiling o/w a very nice, clean copy.
Vincenzo Monti [1754 -1828], Italian poet and dramatist. "Under French rule he became official historiographer of the Italian kingdom and later accommodated himself to Austrian rule as well. Among his many works the best known is the epic Bassvilliana (1793), on the assassination of the French envoy Hugo Basseville at Naples. He is also remembered for his tragedies, among them Aristodemo and for the epic Il bardo della Selva Nera , dedicated to Napoleon. His translation of the Iliad was greatly admired in his day. It is the more remarkable because Monti knew hardly any Greek. He was called the "great translator of the translator of Homer."
