" 'Farthest North' (the title given to the English translation of this book) is Nansen's own account of a remarkable achievement in polar exploration, every detail of which was worked out by Nansen himself and went absolutely according to plan. Early whaling experience, and the traverse of Greenland on snow-shoes and sleighs in 1888-9, convinced him that arctic exploration was feasible on revolutionary lines. He convinced himself, against accepted opinion, that there was a regular ice-drift from Alaska to Greenland. He set himself to design a ship that, by its shape, would evade the crushing pressure of the ice. His idea was deliberately to allow the ship to be frozen into the ice-pack and then to drift across the Arctic regions. This ship, Fram, four hundred tons and immensely strong, was built in a Scottish yard to Nansen's design, sailed from Norway in June 1893 and in the following September rode triumphantly above the ice at the appointed spot. In August 1896 she reached Norway once more. Nansen, with one companion and three sledges drawn by huskies, had left the ship in March 1895 and within a few weeks reached the farthest north latitude yet attained by man. Nansen had hoped to reach the Pole, but the condition of the dogs warned him to turn back. Wintering in Franz Josef Land from August 1895 to May 1896, in June they fell in with an expedition headed by Frederick Jackson, after whom Nansen named his winter quarters--and returned to Norway. His great journey received world wide acclaim and brought him many international honours. In his native land he was made professor of oceanography at Christiania where he concentrated on his favourite subject, the study of ocean currents. He became involved in politics and played a very active part in the movement for Norwegian independence from Swedish rule, subsequently becoming his government's first plenipotentiary in London. After the first World War Nansen entered international politics and under the League of Nations handled the complicated problems associated with the vast numbers of Russian refugees. .....He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922." First edition. 4to., full contemporary calf, this copy has been rebacked with a new spine after the period, raised bands, gilt decoration in the compartments, leather label, viii, 253, (254 blank), (255) "Instructions to the Binder." With 15 folding or double page plates and maps (12 plates and 3 maps) and 11 tables (some folding). Rebacked as noted above, small dampstain (approx 1") on the lower corner of pp.70-76 which is also present in the corner of 2 of the plates appearing in that range but does not affect or even approach the image, o/w a fine copy.
Constantine John Phipps, later Baron Mulgrave [1744-1792] officer in the British Navy and explorer. In 1773 Constantine set off on a voyage of exploration towards the North Pole, with two ships, the 'Racehorse' and the 'Carcass'. Also part of the group was Dr Irving as naturalist and doctor, and Israel Lyons (1739-1775) as astronomer. The 'Carcass' was commanded by Skeffington Lutwidge and one of her midshipmen was a young Horatio Nelson. "This work is an important addition to early nautical science in the polar regions. Besides a journal of the voyage, it contains a descriptive catalogue of the natural history and resources of Spitsbergen. This is the official account written by Phipps himself, who later became the 2nd Baron Mulgrave." (Hill).
