New York: Fowler & Wells Co., 1892. First edition. 8vo., orig. blue cloth gilt, 253, (2)pp. ads. Some wear to spine ends o/w very good. Illustrated with a photographic frontispiece, black-and-white pictures, and diagrams.
The author devotes most of the book to the evils of corsets and tight-lacing – “The destruction of the corset must go to the roots, branch, and remotest twig” – and advocates for “artistic” clothing, which she views as both more attractive and less restrictive than the fads of the day. “Art principles applied to dress relieve us of ostentation, pretence, and folly of ornament, and from the belittling influence of the tyranny of fashion … Non-conformity, even in dress, awakens a spirit of inventiveness and begets liberty of thought.” The author also approves of the revolution in dress pioneered by the Bloomer movement – “The Bloomer episode called universal attention to the great need of rational dress” – although she found the Bloomer costume unaesthetic.
