On Elocution. II. On Reading Works of Taste. London: Thomas Allman, 1842. “A new edition, stereotyped, and considerably improved”. 12mo., cont. diced brown calf, viii, 352pp. Unattributed engraved frontispiece depicting the meeting of Yorick and Maria (complete with the latter's lapdog, Sylvio) in Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. Name on flyleaf, chipped headband, front hinge just starting, some rubbing on edges of boards o/w good.
Despite the promise made on the titlepage, this edition does not, in fact, include Enfield's essay, “On Reading Works of Taste,” which first appeared in an expanded edition of The Speaker published by J. Johnson in 1790.
Enfield compiled this primer on “just and graceful Elocution” for the use of his students while a tutor of rhetoric and modern languages at Warrington Academy. First published in 1774, the anthology is notable for including the work of contemporary writers such as Joseph Addison, Laurence Sterne, and Alexander Pope, as well as contributions to eighteenth-century periodicals like the Spectator and the Rambler.
