FAUGHNAN, Thomas. Stirring Incidents In the Life of a British Soldier.
Toronto: Hunter, Rose and Company, 1879. First edition. 8vo., orig. blue cloth decorated in black, spine lettered in gilt, 336pp. Cheap paper a bit browned, cloth has some rubbing and light soiling, a very good copy, without wear.
Born in Derry, Ireland, Faughnan joined the British Army in order to escape a life of poverty, serving in the 6th Royal Regiment (now the Royal Warwickshire Regiment). This memoir details the life of a private soldier, first in England and then in the Crimea, where he attained the rank of ‘Colour-Sergeant' and served with distinction at the siege of Sebastopol. He writes quite movingly of the conditions suffered by the average soldier in Russia, and details the engagements at Balaklava and the assault of the Redan. Faughnan served in Egypt before retiring and settling in Canada.
