A native of Keswick, England, Dunglison emigrated in 1824 to the United States when Thomas Jefferson offered him the chair of anatomy and physiology at the University of Virginia. Nine years later he moved to Jefferson Medical College where he remained for the duration of his career. Dunglison must rank among the most prolific of American medical writers and one of its finest lecturers. His works, while not offering much original material, were highly readable and accurate. Of his many books, his dictionary was probably the most popular, passing through twenty-three editions. (Heirs).
