PEMBERTON, Christopher Robert. A Practical Treatise On Various Diseases of the Abdominal Viscera.
London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co..., 1806. First edition. Tall 8vo., recently rebound with a brown cloth spine, paper boards, leather spine label, (xvi), (1)-197pp. With two plates. Some scattered foxing, plates are foxed, there is a small faint dampstain in the upper margin of the Table of Contents, the pages are slightly rippled but not dampstained, this is a better than very good copy of the scarce first edition of Pemberton's only work. Heirs of Hippocrates 1207.
Christopher Robert Pemberton [1765-1822] English physician. This is Pemberton's only published work, in which he emphasizes the need for early detection of symptoms in order to slow the advances of abdominal diseases, which if left unchecked will proceed ‘through various stages of increasing malignity, till they at length terminate in fatal, and irreparable evil.' The work includes chapters on the peritoneum; the liver; the gall bladder; the pancreas; the spleen; the kidneys; the stomach, and the intestines.
