‘The emergence of modern gynaecology in America is due in large part to the work of Howard Kelly, professor of gynaecology at the University of Pennsylvania and later at Johns Hopkins. Kelly made pioneering contributions in such areas as the use of cocaine as a local anesthetic in the treatment of uterine displacement, ureter catheterization, the diagnosis of ureteral calculi, the treatment of vesicovaginal fistula, and a host of other diagnostic and therapeutic advances.' ‘The present work and Operative Gynecology are often considered to be Kelly's finest works in clinical medicine...The current treatise includes contributions by Lewellys F. Barker, Walter L. Burrage, Prince Albert Morrow, and other medical specialists of the day who willingly contributed their expertise to Kelly's book. The many illustrations are again drawn by Max Brödel and A. Horn.' (Heirs 2218, 2220).
