(PERIODICAL/HEALTH). The Journal Of Health Conducted By An Association Of Physicians. Volume 1 No. 1 Sept. 9, 1829- Vol. 1 No. 24 August 25, 1830; Volume Two, No.1 Sept. 8, 1830 - Vol. II No. 24, August 24th, 1831.
Philadelphia: Published At No. 108 Chesnut Street, 1830-1831. Two volumes. Tall 8vo., contemporary calf boards that have been rebacked with 20th century paper spines, dreadful paper spine labels (typed and stuck on), (8), (1)-384; (8), (1)-386pp. With an identical frontispiece in each volume. The frontispiece in volume one has been trimmed, this is an ex-library copy with the bookplate of ‘Washington University Medical School' in volume one, and two small rubberstamps at the foot of the title-page and on the verso of the title-page of both volumes, inner hinges of both volumes have been reinforced, some foxing and browning in both volumes, the corners are rubbed and the binding has some repairs, this is still an acceptable copy of a scarce periodical.
The editors state the purpose of the journal as ‘deeply impressed with the belief, that mankind might be saved a large amount of suffering and disease, by a suitable knowledge of the natural laws to which the human frame is subjected, they propose laying down plain precepts, in easy style and familiar language, for the regulation of all the physical agents necessary to health, and to point out under what circumstances of excess or misapplication they become injurious or fatal.' The editors cover a wide range of topics relating to health-- various disease, diet, vaccination, tobacco use, baths, exercise, sanitation, etc. Several of the pieces relate to women's health--particularly diet and exercise. Apparently there were two further volumes published ending in 1833. While there are digitized copies available, there are very few listings in OCLC for physical copies of this scarce periodical.
