Tall 8vo., recently rebound in full brown panelled calf, raised bands, gilt compartments, leather spine label (after the period), viii, (1)-447; (2), (1)-452pp. double columns. There is a leaf paged 392a /392b inserted in v. 2 between p. 392 and 393 (as called for). Some scattered foxing and browning but o/w a fine copy.
Samuel Cooper [1780-1848] English surgeon. This volume ‘includes the author's preface to the London edition of 1809. The Philadelphia edition is unaltered , according to the editor, except for his comments and additions, enclosed in brackets.' (Austin). Cooper was a surgeon on the field at Waterloo, and was later appointed to the chair of surgery at University College, London. His great dictionary went through seven editions during his lifetime and was translated into French, German, and Italian. (G & M) Austin 528; G & M 5585 citing the London edition of 1809.
