Thomas Conant [1842-1905] descended from UELs, noted traveller and author. Conant's family settled in the Oshawa area and made their living as general traders. Thomas Conant made a name for himself as a traveller and writer; contributing articles to the Ontario Reformer (the forerunner of the Times-Gazette). He also authored two books including Sketches of Upper Canada (1898) which includes an account of the murder of his grandfather in 1838. Conant travelled extensively: during the American Civil War he visited Northern armies, visited hospitals in Washington and had a meeting with President Lincoln at the White House. Records of his travels and experiences are included in his books and articles.
