This is an attractive album of portraits of Indian students and staff at a school established by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. It seems to be a farewell gift for Westcott - who sits at the centre of each portrait -
and as it features the signatures or approx. 300 men and boys pictured, we can assume that it was the only one of its kind. Most are formal class portraits, but in one of the most striking - and candid - photos, we see a class of boys in the lower corner posed for their portrait, though the focus is on the school's tree-lined courtyard. It is a captivating document of a mission school in late 19th-century India. "The High School, founded at Vepery in 1864, was in January 1888 affiliated to the Madras University as a second-grade College. The institution consisted of four departments - the F.A. (First in Arts), High School, Middle School, and Primary. In 1891 the College department was closed and, the institution has since been carried on as a 'Lower Secondary School'." - Classified digest of the records of the Society for the propagation of the gospel in foreign parts.
