Hedin explored a vast area in central Asia. During a five year period he travelled from Orenberg in Russia, through Tibet to Peking. He then spent three years exploring the Gobi Desert, and finally he made a return journey to Tibet in order to map the source of the Brahmaputra and Indus rivers.
