Burnaby, a Captain of the British Horse Guards, journeys from St. Petersburg to Transcaspia, December 1875-March 1876, to check on Tzarist plans for Central Asia. Burnaby provides a detailed description of the way of life in, and out of, the cities. The appendix is quite useful, providing data on the Russian advance to the east, the suppression of the Anglican missionary efforts, etc.
