Ivan Lepechin (1740-1802), physician, naturalist, and explorer. Lepechin was appointed by the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg to head one of five academic expeditions to explore the Russian Empire. Upon returning from his travels, he became the head of the Imperial Botanical Gardens in St. Petersburg—a post he held until his death. These first two (of four) accounts cover the first part of his expedition, from St. Petersburg to the south-Russian steppes between the Volga and the Ural river, and into the Ural Mountains (not present here are volume three, published in German in 1783, covering his exploration in Siberia, and volume four, published posthumously and never translated in to German, covering his journey into West Russia).
